Book Series

What does it mean to be a progressive, not just in the narrow political sense, but in your philosophy, your belief system, your worldview?

The Progressive Worldview offers a three-volume response to this question, developing a detailed account of what it means to hold a progressive worldview and making a case for why we should. Volume I: The History of Progress begins this project by tracing the development of the progressive worldview from its origins in the Scientific Revolution through the closing decades of the twentieth century.

In telling this story, The History of Progress follows two tracks. The first details how advances in modern science have radically changed our picture of how the world is put together. The second, a moral track, investigates how this evolving view of nature has altered our conception of how we ought to organize and govern ourselves.

Equal parts history, science, philosophy, and political evangelism, The Progressive Worldview seeks to help contemporary progressives articulate answers to the questions humans have posed for as long as they have existed: Where does the world come from? How does it operate? Where is it headed? And what is our place within it?

Author Andrew Carlson, PHD

After earning a Ph.D. in philosophy at Penn State with an emphasis on ethics, Andrew Carlson decided it was time to stop thinking about doing the right thing and start doing it. He took a job cooking at a downtown Denver soup kitchen and remained there for over three years. Shifting gears, Andrew moved into the building trades, spending the next twenty years restoring historic homes and buildings. Throughout this period, Andrew never stopped thinking, reading, and writing about what it means to do the right thing, particularly from a progressive standpoint. Now Andrew lives in northern Colorado with his wife, Amy, and spends his time writing volumes two and three of The Progressive Worldview.
